Sailor Moon is a media franchise created by mangaka Naoko Takeuchi. Fred Patten credits Takeuchi with popularizing the concept of a sentai ("team") of magical girls, and Paul Gravett credits the series with "revitalizing" the magical-girl genre itself. Sailor Moon redefined the magical-girl genre, as previous magical girls did not use their powers to fight evil, but this has become one of the standard archetypes of the genre.
The story of the various metaseries revolves around the reborn defenders of a kingdom that once spanned the solar system, and around the evil forces that they battle. The major characters - the Sailor Senshi, teenage girls - can transform into heroines named for the moon and planets. The use of "Sailor" comes from a style of girls' school uniform popular in Japan, the sērā fuku ("sailor outfit"), on which Takeuchi modeled the Sailor Senshi's uniforms. The elements of fantasy in the series are heavily symbolic and often based on mythology.
Originally planned to run for only six months, the Sailor Moon anime repeatedly continued due to its popularity, concluding only after a five-year run.
Season 1: Sailor Moon
Original run March 7, 1992 – February 27, 1993
Episodes 46
Sailor Moon is a story about a klutzy, crybaby, 14 year old underachiever named Tsukino Usagi who was given some transformation items and super powers. Usagi transforms into the pretty, sailor suited fighter called Sailor Moon to fight against evil. But even as the super hero, Sailor Moon is klutzy and a crybaby. Then as time goes by, Usagi is joined by some other girls to form a team of sailor suited fighters.
Season 2: Sailor Moon R
Original run March 6, 1993 – March 12, 1994
Episodes 43
Sailor Moon R (R meaning Romance) is itself in two pieces. The first part features two aliens and an energy-dependent alien tree. This only runs for 13 episodes and sets the stage for the real story of Sailor Moon R. It focuses around two things: Rini [Chibi-Usa], a little pink-haired Serena lookalike who literally dropped out of the sky, and a family of time-traveling enemies out to stop Rini and alter the future to their end.
Season 3: Sailor Moon S
Original run March 19, 1994 – February 25, 1995
Episodes 38
Sailor Moon and the senshi are up against a new set of villains: the Death Busters (Professor Tomoe, Kaorinite, the Witches 5, Mistress 9, Pharaoh 90). The Death Busters plan to rule the world by using the energy from the pure heart crystals of innocent victims, but Sailor Moon and the senshi must stop them. The outer senshi (Neptune, Uranus, Pluto, Saturn), also make an appearance, although Pluto appeared briefly in Sailor Moon R.
Season 4: Sailor Moon SuperS
Original run March 4, 1995 – March 2, 1996
Episodes 39
Sailor Moon Super S turns the focus from Serena to little Rini and the pursuit of dreams as an enemy from the hidden past (the Dead Moon Circus) returns during a total solar eclipse, bent on revenge against the joyful people of Earth and intent on spoiling everyone's dreams by finding the one called Pegasus, who is hiding in Rini's dreams.
Season 5: Sailor Moon Sailor Stars
